Post SQL Assistant Broke Visual Studio 2010 Reply with quote
The latest version of SQL Assistant crashed Visual Studio 2010. It wouldn't even allow Visual Studio 2010 to restart. I reinstalled SQL Assistant 6.0, which works fine.

Have following tools installed:

MZTools
CodeSmart
CodeMaid
DevExpress Tools
PowerCommands
PowerGUI VSX
Productivity Power Tools
VSCommands 10
SpellChecker
Remove Unused References

Didn't get the errors. Not enough time.

Please fix.

Thank you.

Which edition of VS 2010 is that? Do you have any service packs installed?

Please try starting VS in Run as Administrator mode and check if that helps.

Currently running Visual Studio 2010 Premium 10.0.40219 SP1 Rel.

Might try this later.

Because you already had 6.0 installed, you may also need to re-register SQL Assistant add-on for Visual Studio. In the SQL Assistant options, options, select Visual Studio target, expand Advanced options on the right, click Register Add-on option and set it to No, click Apply button, change the option back to Yes, and click Apply button again. After that restart Visual Studio in Run as Administrator mode and that should do it.

This option appears to have worked.

Personally, I am of the opinion that your update program should do this by default.

Thank you.

There is an option in the setup "Developer" installation type, which if selected, will do just that. If you don't choose it and leave the default option "Professional", which is for database developers and DBAs) (these guys don't use Visual Studio) the setup won't attempt to register the add-on for Visual Studio or update it. Please see my screenshot for more info.

I totally agree it's not perfect and the setup should be intelligent enough to recognize that an old add-on has been already installed and check if needs to be fixed.

I believe I did do select the Developer installation type. The Visual Studio 2010 option was selected. It didn't reregister the SQL Assistant Component.

Thank you.
